Nikos Kipourgos
Nikos Kipourgos was born in Athens in 1952. He studied Law and Political Science at the University of Athens and then began his studies in music theory and contemporary music techniques under the instruction of Yannis A. Papaioannou. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris on a scholarship granted by the Onassis Foundation and also attended the classes of Max Deutch, Ianis Xenakis and other renowned composers. He was also engaged in Ethnomusicology and Music Education. He co-operated with Manos Hadjidakis on the 3rd programme of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, the annual Song Contest, the August Music Festival and Sirius record company. He has composed vocal music (KNOTS, a choral 'game' for 16 voices, was awarded first prize at the International Meeting of Composers organized by UNESO, 1979), orchestral music, chamber music, songs, ballet music and musicals. For the past few years he has been occupied with incidental music for the theatre, having composed music for many different theatrical genres, ranging from Ancient Greek Drama to contemporary theatre.
He was also engaged in writing music for the cinema which earned him the following prizes: the State Prize given by the Greek Ministry for Culture and Sciences for the films Rom (1990), The dead liqueur (1993), Borderline (1994) and Free Driving (1995), as well as the prize for the Best Film Music at the Thessaloniki Film Festival for the films Aenigma est (1990), Master of the Shadows (1991), The dead liqueur (1993), Borderline (1994) and Presumed Suspect (1994). His original music for the film The dead liqueur earned him the prize for Best Film Music at the International Festival of Valencia, 1993.
