This is an introduction to the voice of Aris Christofellis, male soprano; a great countertenor with an extraordinarily beautiful voice and unparalleled virtuosity and vocal range. His speciality is the ornamentation of the operatic music written for the castrati in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
Aris is a sopranist or 'sopranista', a countertenor who sings in the high soprano. As the first male soprano to be heard in opera in over a hundred years, he is the originator of this voice type in the modern era; but whereas the previous operatic male sopranos were castrati, Aris is a countertenor using an exceptional falsetto.
His musical repertoire is very wide, encompassing Baroque opera, 17th and 18th century oratorios, Renaissance music, lieder, folk songs and modern classical music. He is however best known for his superb interpretations of the Baroque arias written for the castrati, which he sings in the original key and he has often been described as the modern Farinelli. His dramatic voice and gorgeous ornamentation make him one of the finest and most admired singers in the genre.
On this site you will find over 150 music samples, a video sample, a free mp3, song and aria texts, photos, the discography, biography and a recorded interview.
