18th-Century Operas Directory of free resources on the net

The purpose of these pages

In the course of writing the site for Aris Christofellis, I have become aware of how many people are looking for libretti and synopses of 18th-century operas. A number of singers have also asked for help in obtaining scores.

These directories give links to free resources on the net related to the opera and other music of the period. I have often looked for them myself and have gradually built a largish database of links. I present that here.

What is included

Links to the libretto, synopsis or score of any sung music (operas: seria or buffa; Singspiele; sacred music (oratorios, hymns, masses, cantatas); non-operatic secular music (oratorios, cantatas, odes, sung chamber music, concert arias, songs) whose first performance took place between 1 January 1701 and 31 December 1800. These cut-off dates are absolute.

Thanks to the providers

The libretti, synopses and scores linked to here have all been provided without cost, mainly by generous amateur enthusiasts. I thank them for their wonderful contributions.

A growing database

I hope visitors will check back from time to time because the information here is continually being expanded. More and more resources are appearing on the web; indeed, my difficulty is to find the time to report them and to keep track of all of them. Help with correcting omissions and errors will be greatly appreciated.
